Social Security

How much does Social Security increase if I wait until 70?

Delayed retirement credits add 8% a year between full retirement age and 70, on top of any cost-of-living adjustments.

Each month you delay past full retirement age earns two-thirds of one percent, which is 8% a year, and the credits stop at 70 — there is no reward for waiting longer. For someone with a full retirement age of 67, waiting to 70 produces a benefit around a quarter larger, permanently.

Whether that is worth doing depends on health, other income and, for couples, the survivor benefit. Delaying the higher earner's claim raises the amount the surviving spouse will eventually receive, which makes it a decision about two lifetimes rather than one break-even chart.
