Under 65 · Gap cover

Short-term plans, and the trade-offs nobody mentions

Short-term medical is a bridge, not a home. It can be the right buy for a two-month gap and the wrong buy for almost everything else.

In plain words

What you are actually buying

A short-term plan is medically underwritten, time-limited cover. It usually costs much less than a major-medical premium because it can ask about your health, exclude what it finds, cap what it pays and decline to renew.

That is a fair trade for a genuine gap — a month between jobs, a wait for group cover to start. It is a poor trade for a household with ongoing prescriptions, a planned procedure or anything that would look like a pre-existing condition to an underwriter.

  • Pre-existing conditions are usually excluded, not merely priced
  • Essential health benefits are not guaranteed: check maternity, mental health and drugs
  • It does not open a special enrolment period when it ends
  • Losing job-based cover does open one — often at a subsidised price

Questions

What people ask us about this

It is a real insurance product, but it is not major medical. It can exclude pre-existing conditions, cap benefits and decline renewal, none of which a Marketplace plan may do.

You can, and for healthy households it will often be cheaper up front. The cost of that saving arrives with the first significant claim, which is why we always price the subsidised option first.

No. When a short-term plan ends, the ending is not a qualifying life event, so you may have to wait for open enrolment.
