What counts as a qualifying life event?

Losing coverage, marriage or divorce, a birth or adoption, a permanent move, and certain changes in income or immigration status.

Each event opens a special enrolment period, usually sixty days, during which you may buy or change a Marketplace plan. Losing coverage is the broadest category and includes the end of a job, ageing off a parent's plan at twenty-six, and losing Medicaid eligibility. Voluntarily dropping a plan is not a qualifying event.

Most events require documentation — a termination letter, a marriage certificate, proof of a new address. Gathering it at the start rather than after a data-matching notice arrives saves weeks, and our qualifying event finder walks through the common cases.

An estimate for planning, not a quote. Medicare and the Marketplace set your real figures.
