Medicare Savings Programs in Georgia
State programmes that pay Medicare premiums and sometimes more, for households under certain income and asset limits.
By Ana Beatriz Salgado, Cedar Landing Benefits

Medicare Savings Programs are state-run, federally funded programmes that help pay Medicare costs for people with limited income and assets. In Georgia they are administered through the state Medicaid agency.
They are chronically under-claimed, largely because nobody tells people they exist.
What they pay
Depending on which programme you qualify for, the state may pay your Part B premium, and in the fullest version may also cover deductibles, coinsurance and copays. Qualifying also opens the door to Extra Help with prescription costs, which is often worth more than the premium saving.
Income and asset limits are set annually, and some categories of income and property are excluded from the test. Because they date quickly, we do not print the figures here — we check them with you.
Applying is worth the hour
The application is a state form with documentary evidence: proof of income, proof of resources, and your Medicare card. It takes about an hour with someone who has done it before, and it can be submitted at any time of year — there is no enrolment window.
We help clients with these applications and do not earn anything from them. That is the clearest illustration we can give of what independent advice is supposed to mean.
